Day 1

Theme
The fall has broken our relationship with God. Jesus redeems it.

Scripture
Genesis 1:26-27
Genesis 3:1-7

Discussion
"The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever." Augustine
In the garden, we had perfect communion with God and we were his perfect image bearers. The fall broke this relationship and fractured mans relationship with God. Eve attempted to justify the situation to decide for herself what was right and wrong (Gen. 3:6). Do you ever find yourself justifying your sin? What sin(s) are your currently justifying that you need to repent of?

Deep down we know that we were made by and for God but we search for meaning in all the wrong places. We end up making a God out of everything. John Calvin referred to the human heart as an "idol factory". We often take what God has given as good gifts and turn them into idols. What things in your life have become a God to you? What are you putting your hope and your trust in?

The world is full of people made for God but who are hiding from him. We see in Genesis that man goes from walking with God to hiding from God. Are you exhausted from trying to hide your sin from God?

Jesus redeems our relationship with God by his work on the cross. Through his death and resurrection we have been given his perfect righteousness and obedience. He has also given us a perfect picture of how to resist temptation, to commune with the father, to live in obedience and to live as a perfect image bearer.

Prayer
For Thyself, best Gift Divine.
To our race so freely given,
For that great, great love of Thine,
Peace on earth and joy in Heaven.
Lord of all to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful Praise.

Day 2

Theme
The fall has broken our relationship with one another. Jesus redeems it.

Scripture
Genesis 2:18-25
Genesis 3:11-12

Discussion
An important part of actively mirroring God is loving one another. “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” Anthony Hoekema says, “Man cannot be truly human apart from others.” God created us to be in community with one another and to use our gifts an talents to bless each other in community. We see in Genesis 2-3 that Adam goes from calling Eve, “Bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” to pointing the finger at her to God as the one who caused him to sin.

This broken relationship has cause us to use people and offer love to serve ourselves. Do you find yourself being self centered in your love for others? Do you tend to give love when there is something to be gained in return? Do you use your time, talents and resources to love your neighbor or for unnecessary personal gain?

Even in spite of our sin we are still we are compelled to be in relationship with one another. We want to love and to be loved but we are scared of being vulnerable enough for those things. Does the idea of community make you feel uneasy? Do you find it hard to trust people who desire to have a relationship with you?

Jesus’ told his disciples, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). Jesus redeems our broken image by revealing a love greater than all. He laid down his life for his friends. (John 15:13).

Prayer
For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild.
Lord of all to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful Praise.

Day 3

Theme
The fall has broken our relationship with creation. Jesus redeems it.

Scripture
Psalm 8

Discussion
As image bearers of God we have been given the command to create a God-glorifying culture. Anthony Hoekema notes that, “ Man is called by God to develop all the potentialities found in nature and in humankind as a whole. He must seek to develop not only agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, but also science, technology and art." How are you using the resources you have and the talents God has given you to create God glorifying culture? How does this command we have been given affect the way you view your job?

God created everything we see as works of art. We were placed in the earth both to subdue it and enjoy it. When is the last time your admired a sun set? Or gazed at the stars at night? Do these things cause you to worship and wonder at the marvelous works of God?

Man must also rule over nature in such a way to serve it as well. Do you find your self unconcerned with the condition of our planet? Do you see a God-given command to care for and serve the earth? Do you feel that preserving the earth and its usefulness brings glory to God?

Jesus redeems the broken image with creation by showing that he, the true image, ruled over nature on multiple occasions. He calmed the storm to save his disciples, multiplied loves and fish to feed five thousand people, changed water into wine. He also healed people, making the blind to see, the lame to walk and the dead to live. In all these things Jesus ruled over creation to cultivate a culture that glorified God.

Prayer
For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies,
For the love which from our birth,
Over and around us lies.
Lord of all to Thee we raise
This our hymn of grateful Praise.
