Family Worship Guide June 27 - July 1

Day 1

Theme
It's okay to not be okay.

Scripture
Lamentations 3:14-24

Discussion
Can you remember a time when you felt as if your very soul needed to cry out to God? Think about those circumstances and the emotions they brought about.

How do you tend to deal with your emotion? Do you tend to be overly emotional, loosing control of them or do you bury them and turn to coping mechanisms or stoicism?

The good news for all of us is that God can handle the depth and breadth of our emotion. Like a good father, he wants us to bear our soul to him and he can be trusted. Spend a few quiet moments in prayer in light of this truth then use the Psalm below to finish your prayer time.

Day 2

Theme
Lament reminds us that God is faithful.

Scripture
Psalm 40

Discussion
Pastor Steven made the point that "Our circumstances do not change the fact that God is sovereign, holy and faithful." When you find yourself struggling, do you tend to question God's faithfulness in light of your circumstances?

When you think of God's holiness, what comes to mind? God is holy, that is, he is unrelenting in his devotion to his character. He is always and forever will be faithful simply because that is who he is!

Our lament drives us to the Lord and to his promises to which he is faithful. What promises do we find in Psalm 40 that we can cling to in the midst of lamenting?

Prayer
Pray through Psalm 100

Song

Day 3

Theme
Jesus was forsaken so we don't have to be and his work on the cross turns our lament into Joy.

Scripture
Isaiah 53:3-6
Psalm 30:8-12

Discussion
Jesus is the tangible evidence that God is faithful even in the darkest of circumstances. Does the gospel stir your emotions and your affections for Jesus in the midst of suffering?

Pastor Steven encouraged us Sunday saying, "When you struggle, don't just suck it up, but worship the Lord in his strength. Ask the Lord to help your heart delight in him." Our joy comes from God. Are you trying to muster up and manufacture joy? Do you feel the need to put on a happy face and perform? Turn to the Lord and ask him to delight your heart.

When we struggle and hope in the Lord, we have a great opportunity to share the gospel with others. Who in your life needs to hear these truths; that God is faithful and we can cry out to him in the midst of suffering?

Prayer
Pray through Psalm 90:13-17

Song
"When My Heart Is Torn Asunder"
